Die Hirtenmaina wurde von der IUCN zu einer der 100 schlimmsten invasiven Arten der Welt erklärt. Ursprünglich aus Südasien stammend, wurde sie in tropische Regionen weltweit eingeführt, wo sie einheimischen Vögeln Nisthöhlen streitig macht. Der Wilson-Paradiesvogel gehört zu den außergewöhnlichsten gefärbten Vögeln der Erde. Männchen räumen sorgfältig eine Fläche des Waldbodens als Balzplatz frei und entfernen dabei jedes Blatt und jeden Zweig. Aufgrund seines eng begrenzten Vorkommens auf wenigen Inseln war die Art der Wissenschaft bis ins späte 20. Jahrhundert kaum bekannt.
