Die Hirtenmaina wurde von der IUCN zu einer der 100 schlimmsten invasiven Arten der Welt erklärt. Der Steinadler zählt zu den kraftvollsten und wendigsten Greifvögeln der nördlichen Hemisphäre. Von zahlreichen Kulturen verehrt, wird er seit Jahrhunderten in der Falknerei eingesetzt, insbesondere von kasachischen Adlerjägern Zentralasiens.
