Diese kraftvollen Greifvögel bauen die größten Baumhorste aller Vögel, manche mit einem Gewicht von über zwei Tonnen.

Der Kanadareiher ist mit einer Höhe von bis zu 1,4 Metern der größte Reiher Nordamerikas. Diese geduldigen Jäger können lange Zeit reglos verharren, bevor sie mit bemerkenswerter Geschwindigkeit nach Beute stoßen. Sie brüten in großen Kolonien, sogenannten Reiherkolonien, und kehren oft Jahr für Jahr an denselben Ort zurück.
