Der Papageitaucher, oft als Clown der Meere bezeichnet, ist ein charismatischer Seevogel, der in Höhlen an nördlichen Meeresklippen brütet. Dank rückwärts gerichteter Dornen am Gaumen kann er bis zu einem Dutzend Fische quer im Schnabel tragen. Klimawandel und Überfischung bedrohen sein Nahrungsangebot und führen zu Bestandsrückgängen.
Kernbeißer
Der Kernbeißer besitzt im Verhältnis zu seiner Körpergröße den kräftigsten Schnabel aller europäischen Vögel und kann Kirschkerne knacken, für die eine Kraft von 27 bis 43 kg nötig ist. Trotz seines markanten Erscheinungsbilds ist er bekanntermaßen scheu und schwer zu beobachten. Sein Schädel weist besondere Anpassungen auf, um die enormen beim Kernknacken entstehenden Kräfte abzufedern.
