Pale grey upperparts, white underparts with a black cap. Blood-red bill and short red legs. Deeply forked tail streamers. Winter adults lose the full black cap.

Die Küstenseeschwalbe hält den Rekord für die längste bekannte Wanderung im Tierreich und legt jährlich rund 70.000 km zwischen Arktis und Antarktis und zurück zurück. Der Helmkasuar wird aufgrund seiner kräftigen Beine und der dolchartigen inneren Kralle, die bis zu 12 cm lang werden kann, oft als gefährlichster Vogel der Welt bezeichnet. Trotz dieses Rufs sind Kasuare eine ökologische Schlüsselart des Regenwalds und verbreiten die Samen von Pflanzen, die kein anderes Tier verbreiten kann. Der Zweck ihres markanten Helms wird weiterhin diskutiert.
