Der Helmkasuar wird aufgrund seiner kräftigen Beine und der dolchartigen inneren Kralle, die bis zu 12 cm lang werden kann, oft als gefährlichster Vogel der Welt bezeichnet. Trotz dieses Rufs sind Kasuare eine ökologische Schlüsselart des Regenwalds und verbreiten die Samen von Pflanzen, die kein anderes Tier verbreiten kann. Der Zweck ihres markanten Helms wird weiterhin diskutiert.
