Hallux

In passerines, the hallux is long and directed backward, allowing the foot to lock around perches through a passive tendon mechanism — enabling birds to sleep on branches without muscular effort. In woodpeckers, two toes point backward (zygodactyl arrangement) for better grip on bark. Ground-running species such as larks often have an elongated, straightened hallux that prevents sinking into soft substrates.
