Anatomy

Crop

定义

A muscular pouch in the esophagus used to temporarily store and soften food before digestion.

详细说明

The crop enables birds to gather food rapidly and process it later in safety — a key advantage for species foraging in exposed areas. Doves and pigeons produce protein-rich 'crop milk' from sloughed crop epithelium to feed nestlings. In raptors, the crop stores recently swallowed prey whole, which is later compressed into a pellet and regurgitated before the next meal.
