白头鹤体型小于其他鹤类,翼展约185厘米。羽色以深灰为主,头部白色,前额和眼先呈鲜红色。繁殖于俄罗斯远东及中国东北的沼泽地带,在中国长江中下游越冬。因栖息地丧失和猎杀,种群数量持续减少,被列为易危物种。

Critically Endangered; world population only ~4,000 birds. Breeds in Arctic Siberia; winters primarily at Poyang Lake, China.
