A large, social Phasianidae pheasant (~2.14 kg) of high-altitude coniferous and mixed forests in Sichuan and Tibet. Predominantly white with black cap and crimson facial skin. Groups dig for roots and bulbs with strong feet. Largely sympatric with pandas; protected in reserves. Least Concern.

Predominantly white with black crown and glossy blue-black tail; brownish flight feathers; white ear tufts; red facial skin and legs. Among the whitest of pheasants; sexes nearly identical in plumage.
Habitat & Range

Resident of open forest, alpine scrub, and meadow in eastern Tibet and western Sichuan (China), at 3,000–4,800 m elevation.
Diet & Feeding
Forages by digging for tubers, bulbs, roots, and invertebrates; supplements with seeds and plant material in alpine scrub.

Loud, raucous 'gak-gak-GAAK' crows; harsh and cackling, audible across Sichuan mountain forest. Flock calls noisy and sustained. Alarm is rapid loud honking; contact clucks are guttural and low.
