Resident on sandy ocean beaches, estuaries, and salt-lake margins throughout Australia. Insectivorous. Sedentary with local movements. Nests above high-tide mark; vulnerable to beach recreation disturbance.

Restricted to high-altitude moorland and montane grassland above 1,800 m in Ethiopia. Insectivorous. Sedentary; rare and little-studied. Declining due to overgrazing and agricultural encroachment.
