Hakkında
The Eurasian Spoonbill (Platalea leucorodia) is the most widespread member of the genus Platalea and the only spoonbill found across Europe. It is a large, all-white wading bird belonging to the family Threskiornithidae, measuring 70–95 cm in length with a wingspan of 115–135 cm and weighing 1,100–2,000 grams. The most immediately distinctive feature is its long, spatula-shaped bill, flattened and widened at the tip to form an oval spoon shape, which is black with a yellow tip in adults. Breeding adults develop a crest of yellow-orange feathers at the nape and an orange-yellow breast patch. The legs and feet are black.
The Eurasian Spoonbill breeds across a broad range from Europe through Central Asia to China, with important populations in the Netherlands, Spain, and the Danube Delta. It winters primarily in tropical Africa (particularly West Africa), the Indian subcontinent, and parts of Southeast Asia. The species is highly migratory across the northern parts of its range, undertaking long-distance migrations between breeding and wintering grounds.
Freshwater and brackish wetlands, shallow coastal lagoons, estuaries, rice paddies, and mudflats constitute the primary habitat. The spoonbill's foraging technique is unique and easily observed: the bird wades in shallow water and sweeps its open bill from side to side in a characteristic scything motion, detecting prey by touch. It feeds primarily on small fish, aquatic insects, crustaceans, mollusks, frogs, and plant material. Foraging often occurs in groups, sometimes in association with herons and egrets.
Breeding colonies are located in trees, reedbeds, or on islands, and are often mixed with herons, egrets, and cormorants. The nest is a substantial platform of sticks and reeds. Clutches typically contain three to four white eggs with brown blotches, incubated by both parents for approximately 24–25 days. Chicks are fed by both parents and fledge at about 45–50 days. The species shows high fidelity to traditional colony sites.
The Eurasian Spoonbill is listed as Least Concern, with populations in Western Europe having recovered significantly following severe declines in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries due to hunting, egg collection, and habitat destruction. Conservation efforts and legal protection have allowed populations to rebound, with the Dutch population expanding dramatically and recolonizing former breeding areas.
