A medium-sized partridge (~270 g) of family Phasianidae, with a rich chestnut belly and boldly patterned head. Endemic to the montane forests of Java at 800–3,000 m elevation. Inhabits primary and secondary highland forest. Forages on the forest floor for seeds, berries, and invertebrates. Least Concern; well represented in Java's mountain national parks despite the island's high human population density.

Penetrating, flute-like 'wee-WU' whistle in Javan mountain forest; male calls at dawn from understorey. Alarm is rapid staccato 'kek-kek'. Pairs duet with slight overlapping of notes.
