A medium-sized partridge (~270 g) of family Phasianidae, with a rich chestnut belly and boldly patterned head. Endemic to the montane forests of Java at 800–3,000 m elevation. Inhabits primary and secondary highland forest. Forages on the forest floor for seeds, berries, and invertebrates. Least Concern; well represented in Java's mountain national parks despite the island's high human population density.

Brown above; throat white bordered black; breast grey; belly and flanks rich chestnut contrasting with grey breast; bare red eye-ring; chestnut belly contrasting with pale breast is the key marking.

Répartition géographique
Endemic to Java and Bali at 300-2,500 m. Found in dense montane forest and forest edges on volcanic mountains.
Diet & Feeding
Forages on Javan and Balinese montane forest floor for seeds, invertebrates, and small fruits. Scratches leaf litter.

Chant
Penetrating, flute-like 'wee-WU' whistle in Javan mountain forest; male calls at dawn from understorey. Alarm is rapid staccato 'kek-kek'. Pairs duet with slight overlapping of notes.
