A medium Phasianidae partridge (~633 g) of rocky alpine and subalpine terrain in the Alps, Balkans, and Apennines. Very similar to Chukar but with a broader black face border and whiter throat. Inhabits steep rocky slopes above 600 m. Feeds on seeds and plant material. Near Threatened from tourism pressure.

Grey upperparts purer grey than Chukar; white face and throat with black gorget lacking streaks; bold chestnut and white barred flanks; red bill and legs; grey breast; white supercilium. Very similar to Chukar.
Habitat & Range

Resident of rocky alpine and subalpine slopes from the Alps and southern Italy through the Balkans to Greece and Turkey, at 1,500–2,500 m.

Eats seeds, leaves, shoots, and invertebrates in rocky Mediterranean mountain scrub.

Loud 'chuck-chuck-CHUKAR' calls from European alpine scree; similar to Chukar but slightly higher-pitched. Alarm is rapid cackling when flushed from rocks. Males call from rocky perches at dawn.
