About These Birds

Horned Coot

Horned Coot (Fulica cornuta) is a 58–62 cm large Andean coot of the high-altitude salt lakes of Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina above 4,000 m. All-black with white bill and a distinctive large fleshy horn projecting from the frontal shield. Builds massive stone nest mounds in shallow lakes. Feeds on aquatic algae. Near Threatened.

Marquesan Swamphen

Marquesan Swamphen (Porphyrio paepae) is an extinct flightless swamphen known only from subfossil bones from the Marquesas Islands, French Polynesia. Lost following Polynesian settlement and later European contact. Part of the broader pattern of Pacific island rail extinctions linked to human arrival and introduced rats.
