A unique medium-sized hummingbird (13-14 cm) with an upcurved, hook-tipped bill bearing tooth-like serrations, unique among hummingbirds. Dark green plumage. Found in humid Pacific lowland forests from Panama to western Ecuador. Nectarivore and insectivore. Poorly studied.

Nectarivore with serrated bill tip adapted for piercing tough flower bases of Heliconia and bromeliads. Supplements with insects.
