About These Birds

Iconic extinct flightless pigeon of Mauritius, ~100 cm and 10–18 kg, with grey plumage, vestigial wings, and a large hooked bill. Fed on fallen fruits; fearless of humans having evolved with no natural predators. Driven extinct by hunting and introduced animals by ~1690 CE; a global symbol of human-caused extinction.

Medium dove, 27–30 cm, with warm rufous-brown upperparts, a black neck collar, and a deep orange-red breast. Endemic to the highland plateaus and montane grasslands of northern Nigeria and Cameroon. Granivore of grass seeds and cultivated grains. Poorly studied and localised range. Least Concern.
