About These Birds

Red-moustached Fruit-dove

Red-moustached Fruit-dove (Ptilinopus mercierii), 27 cm. Green with a red moustachial streak and orange underparts; endemic to the Marquesas Islands. Last confirmed on Nuku Hiva and Hiva Oa. Possibly Extinct; last reliably recorded in the 1970s. Threatened by introduced rats and cats.

Pin-tailed Green-pigeon (Treron apicauda), 42 cm including elongated central tail feathers. Bright apple-green with a yellow-green head and a diagnostic elongated pointed tail. Found in subtropical broadleaf forest from the Himalayas through Myanmar to Indochina. Frugivore specialising in figs. Locally common but declining.
