The Black-hooded Sierra-finch is a compact, ground-dwelling finch; males have a black hood, gray body, and rufous-brown upperwings, while females are more streaked brown. It inhabits high-altitude grasslands, rocky slopes, and puna scrub in the Andes from Peru south to northwestern Argentina, typically above 3,000 meters.
