About These Birds

Brown-capped Emerald Dove

Small dove, 23–26 cm, with iridescent emerald-green upperparts, a brown crown (not grey), and a longer bill than the Grey-capped Emerald Dove. Ranges from the Andamans and Sundas through New Guinea to Australia and Pacific islands. Inhabits dense rainforest and monsoon forest. Granivore and frugivore on the forest floor. Least Concern.

Red-moustached Fruit-dove (Ptilinopus mercierii), 27 cm. Green with a red moustachial streak and orange underparts; endemic to the Marquesas Islands. Last confirmed on Nuku Hiva and Hiva Oa. Possibly Extinct; last reliably recorded in the 1970s. Threatened by introduced rats and cats.
