A large guineafowl (~1.4 kg) of family Numididae, with white-spotted grey-black plumage, a bony casque, and red and blue facial wattles. Native to sub-Saharan African grasslands and savannas; widely domesticated worldwide. Social, foraging in large flocks for seeds, insects, and small vertebrates. Least Concern; one of the world's most familiar gallinaceous birds, used as food and pest control.

Dark grey to black body densely covered with small round white spots; bare blue-grey and red facial skin; prominent bony yellowish casque on crown; red-and-blue wattles. Spotted pattern is highly distinctive.
Habitat & Range

Resident across sub-Saharan Africa from Senegal to Ethiopia and south to South Africa. Found in open woodland, savanna, and bush. Widely domesticated.
Diet & Feeding
Omnivorous; forages in African savanna and woodland for insects, seeds, tubers, and small vertebrates. Scratches soil in flocks.

Produces a repetitive, staccato buck-wheat or chi-chi-chi-CHREE call; flocks create a raucous, cackling chorus. The loud, machine-gun-like cackling alarm is unmistakable; flocks are exceptionally noisy on African savannas.
