A large cracid (~2.4 kg) of family Cracidae, males black with a yellow knob at the bill base and curly crest. Found in tropical dry forests, gallery forests, and forest edges in Venezuela and adjacent Colombia. Forages on the ground and in low vegetation for fruits and seeds. Near Threatened due to habitat loss and hunting in Venezuela's increasingly degraded lowland forests.

Male is black with white lower belly; curly black crest; prominent yellow knob at bill base; yellow bare facial skin. Female barred rufous and black with finely curled crest; yellow knob on bill is key feature.

Resident in Venezuela and adjacent Colombia. Found in lowland dry and gallery forest in the Llanos and Caribbean coast region.

Eats large fruits, seeds, and invertebrates on forest floor of Venezuelan and Colombian lowlands. Forages mainly on ground.
