Humid lowland and foothill forest from sea level to 800 m, from southern Mexico through Central America to northwestern Panama. Prefers undisturbed primary forest interior with dense leaf litter.
Barred Tinamou
Restricted to humid lowland forest along the Casiquiare canal region of southern Venezuela and extreme northwestern Brazil. Associated with river-edge and flooded forest at low elevations. Rarely recorded.

Canta ao amanhecer com voz suave. Extremamente difícil de observar apesar de ser razoavelmente comum em florestas adequadas da América Central.
