Loud, descending 'chi-CA-go' call of 3–4 notes; males give repetitive assembly calls. Alarm is rapid staccato clucking; flocks produce soft conversational chi-chi notes.

Resonant 'cor-WE-co' duet calls; male initiates, female responds immediately. Very loud for size, audible through dense Panamanian forest. Alarm is rapid, harsh clucking.

How to Tell Them Apart
Gambel's Quail
Male has black face and throat, white facial borders, rufous crown, blue-grey breast, chestnut flanks, and black patch on lower belly; forward-curving black plume. Female dull grey-brown, streaked.

Forages secretively on the forest floor in pairs or small groups for seeds and invertebrates. Least Concern; found in intact forest of Central America's Pacific and Caribbean slopes.
