Rarely seen; detected by its distinctive calls at dawn. Feeds on seeds, berries, and invertebrates. Least Concern within extensive forest range.

Dark brown above with black and buff mottling; white throat; rufous-buff below with heavy dark brown streaking; white-spotted flanks. Male with red facial skin; female lacks facial skin coloration.

Harsh, squeaky 'kreek-kreek-kreek' calls from Central African forest floor; repeated insistently at dawn and dusk. Alarm is explosive rapid cackle. Contact between pairs is soft guttural clucking.
