A small Phasianidae francolin (~269 g) of lowland rainforest and forest edges across equatorial West and Central Africa. Brown-streaked plumage blends with leaf litter. Rarely seen; detected by its distinctive calls at dawn. Feeds on seeds, berries, and invertebrates. Least Concern within extensive forest range.

Dark brown above with black and buff mottling; white throat; rufous-buff below with heavy dark brown streaking; white-spotted flanks. Male with red facial skin; female lacks facial skin coloration.

Song
