A small Phasianidae quail (~75 g) of open grassland, scrub, and cereal crops across the Indian subcontinent. Males have distinctive black breast markings. Arrives with the monsoon rains and is closely associated with cereal agriculture. Feeds on grass seeds and invertebrates. Least Concern; locally common.

Male brown above with buff streaks; white below with bold black anchor marks on breast and streaked flanks; black throat patch with white surround. Female plain brown with buff streaking; smaller than Common Quail.
