A small Phasianidae quail (~75 g) of open grassland, scrub, and cereal crops across the Indian subcontinent. Males have distinctive black breast markings. Arrives with the monsoon rains and is closely associated with cereal agriculture. Feeds on grass seeds and invertebrates. Least Concern; locally common.
