Identificação
Plumagem
Glossy blue-black body feathers. Bare neck skin blue with red patches at rear; smaller casque than other cassowaries. Reduced wattles. Chicks streaked brown and cream for camouflage.
Habitat & Range
Dense montane rainforest and cloud forest at 600–3,300 m on New Guinea. Forages on the forest floor among root tangles and dense understorey. Avoids lowland and heavily disturbed forest.
Distribuição geográfica
Restricted to Haast district on New Zealand's South Island. Rarest kiwi; non-migratory and sedentary in lowland rainforest.
Diet & Feeding
Nocturnal omnivore in Stewart Island forests; extracts earthworms and insect larvae from peaty soils; takes berries and amphipods.
