How to Tell Them Apart
Malleefowl
Upperparts intricately patterned with black, white, and buff vermiculations forming an ocellated mosaic; black streak down centre of white throat. Underparts pale buff-grey; tail barred black and white.
Biak Scrubfowl
Dull brownish with darker brown upperparts; bare reddish periorbital skin; small pale crest on forecrown; underparts grey-buff. Similar to Dusky Scrubfowl but restricted to Biak Island, with slightly paler flanks.
About These Birds
Malleefowl
A large megapode (~2.1 kg) of family Megapodiidae, cryptically patterned in brown, black, and white. Endemic to arid and semi-arid mallee scrublands of southern Australia. Males build enormous soil-and-litter mounds, monitoring internal temperature with the bill and adjusting insulation year-round. Feeds on seeds and invertebrates. Vulnerable due to land clearing and introduced predators.
Biak Scrubfowl
소형 머리매로 체장 약 31cm이며, 갈색 몸통에 회색 머리, 붉은 얼굴 피부를 갖는다. 인도네시아 뉴기니 북부 쉔크렌 만 섬들에 서식하는 고유종이다. 발효 무더기에 알을 낳아 부화시킨다. 취약한 상태이다.
