Resident along large sandy rivers of West and Central Africa; less tied to rocky rapids than Rock Pratincole. Hawks insects aerially. Sedentary. Forages along sandy riverbanks and bars.

Resident in dry miombo and acacia woodland of sub-Saharan Africa from Senegal to Ethiopia and south to Zimbabwe. Insectivorous; most active at night. Cryptic and difficult to see in daytime.
