솜털딱따구리는 북아메리카에서 가장 작고 가장 널리 분포하는 딱따구리이다. 소형 체구 덕분에 더 큰 딱따구리가 접근할 수 없는 가는 나뭇가지와 잡초 줄기에서 먹이를 찾을 수 있다. 솜털딱따구리는 겨울에 혼종 무리에 합류하여 여러 종이 함께 포식자를 감시하는 이점을 얻는다.
