How to Tell Them Apart

Rich chestnut-brown head and neck; dark brown back. Flanks rufous with pale buff streaks and dark spots. Belly blackish. Long, dark pinkish legs. Upright posture typical of whistling-ducks. Sexes similar.

황갈색-갈색 몸통, 어두운 갈색 등, 엷은 황갈색 아랫면, 밤색 목깃을 가진 중형 홍따오기. 인도네시아에서 호주·태평양 섬까지 열대 습지에 서식. 매우 사회적이고 유목성. 얕은 담수에서 수면 채이기와 잠수로 채이며 먹이를 구한다.

중형 오리로 체장 약 55cm이며, 갈색과 흰색이었다. 뉴질랜드 오클랜드 제도에 서식하던 종으로 1902년경 멸종하였다. 잠수하여 어류와 수생 무척추동물을 먹었을 것으로 추정된다. 멸종 종이다.
