Inhabits humid lowland and foothill forests from Honduras to Ecuador and Venezuela. Forages on the forest floor for seeds and small invertebrates. Near Threatened; shy and little-studied, dependent on intact forest but experiencing habitat loss throughout its Central and South American range.
