밤색 위꼬리덮깃, 엷은 얼굴, 어두운 갈색 머리를 가진 소형 따뜻한 갈색 홍따오기. 아시아에서 가장 널리 분포하고 흔한 홍따오기. 인도 아대륙에서 동남아시아까지 담수 습지에 서식. 나무 구멍과 가끔 초가지붕에 둥지를 튼다.
