오스트레일리아의 가장 큰 뻣뻣한 꼬리 오리(약 1.9kg)로, 수컷의 부리에서 가죽질 돌기가 늘어집니다. 오스트레일리아 남부의 깊고 영구적인 담수 호수와 습지에 서식합니다. 수컷은 구애 시 사향 냄새를 방출합니다. 물고기, 개구리, 갑각류, 연체동물을 잠수하여 먹습니다. 은밀한 행동으로 인해 거의 볼 수 없는 관심대상 종입니다.
