대형 쏙독새류(28~30cm)로, 과 중 가장 크다. 해발 1,500~3,400m의 뉴기니 산악 삼림에 서식한다. 갈색 깃털에 가는 가로줄 무늬가 있다. 야행성 곤충식성이다.

Large; rufous-brown upperparts with dark brown barring; underparts pale buff with dark brown barring throughout; facial disc bordered dark; two colour morphs—rufous and grey-brown; largest owlet-nightjar with somewhat cat-like facial patterning.

Found in New Guinea from sea level to 2,400 m. Resident in lowland rainforest, hill forest, and lower montane moss forest.
Diet & Feeding
Nocturnal insectivore catching beetles and moths in short sallying flights; also gleans invertebrates from tree surfaces.
