アメリカ南西部からメキシコの砂漠・低木地に生息するカッコウの仲間（体長52〜62cm）。長い尾と素早い走りが特徴で、飛ぶよりも地上を走ることを好む。Geococcyx californianus（ロードランナー）は毒を持つガラガラヘビを含む爬虫類や昆虫を捕食する。アメリカ南西部の象徴的な鳥で、有名なアニメキャラクターの元ネタ。Cuculidae科。
