アメリカ南西部からメキシコの砂漠・低木地に生息するカッコウの仲間(体長52〜62cm)。長い尾と素早い走りが特徴で、飛ぶよりも地上を走ることを好む。Geococcyx californianus(ロードランナー)は毒を持つガラガラヘビを含む爬虫類や昆虫を捕食する。アメリカ南西部の象徴的な鳥で、有名なアニメキャラクターの元ネタ。Cuculidae科。
Lesser Roadrunner
Lesser Roadrunner (Geococcyx velox) — 46–52 cm. Similar to Greater Roadrunner but smaller with a more streaked breast. Found in dry scrub, open woodland, and arid valleys from Mexico to Nicaragua. Non-parasitic; carnivorous; eats insects and small vertebrates. Shares the same terrestrial running lifestyle as its northern relative.
