北半球全域の森林、草原、湿地で繁殖し、南方で越冬するハヤブサ（体長24〜33cm）。小型で素早く、ヒバリなどの小鳥を主に捕食する。Falco columbarius（コチョウゲンボウ）は非常に素早い飛翔能力を持ち、チドリなどの水鳥を追いかけることもある。北米の農地や草原でも普通に見られる。Falconidae科。

The African Pygmy-falcon is one of Africa's smallest raptors, with a wingspan of about 23 cm and a weight of around 61 g. It inhabits dry savannas and thornbush, often nesting in the large communal nests of weaver birds, and hunts lizards and large insects.
