Breeds on boreal and subarctic lakes and boggy pools from Iceland and Scandinavia across northern Eurasia to Siberia. Winters on large lakes, estuaries, rivers, and agricultural fields in northwestern Europe and eastern Asia.
African Pygmy-goose
Freshwater lakes, ponds, and rivers with floating water lilies and other aquatic vegetation across sub-Saharan Africa from Senegal to Tanzania. Nests in tree cavities near water. Highly dependent on water lily vegetation.

How to Tell Them Apart
Whooper Swan
All-white plumage. Long yellow bill with large wedge-shaped yellow patch extending past nostrils, contrasting with black tip. Long flat head profile. Holds neck erect and straight. Juveniles pale gray-brown.
African Pygmy-goose
Tiny. Males have glossy dark green head with orange facial patch and ear spot; chestnut-orange flanks; white underparts; black and green back. Females duller with dark eye-stripe. Small yellow-green bill.

Whooper Swan
北ヨーロッパ・アジアで繁殖し、南方で越冬する大型のハクチョウ(体長140〜165cm)。純白の体と黄色が多い嘴が特徴。Cygnus cygnus(オオハクチョウ)は日本では北海道の阿寒湖、本州の猪苗代湖など各地の越冬地で見られ、ワシントン条約(CITES)とアフリカ・ユーラシア渡り性水鳥の保全に関する協定(AEWA)で保護されている。Anatidae科。
