Breeds on boreal and subarctic lakes and boggy pools from Iceland and Scandinavia across northern Eurasia to Siberia. Winters on large lakes, estuaries, rivers, and agricultural fields in northwestern Europe and eastern Asia.

Song & Call Comparison
Whooper Swan
A loud, ringing 'wh-OOH-wh-OOH' bugle. Less high-pitched than Trumpeter; similar to Tundra Swan but deeper. Pairs call in musical antiphony. Carries very far over water.
Mallard
Female gives the classic 'quack-quack-quack', descending in pitch. Male utters soft nasal 'raeb-raeb'. Both give a high 'gag-gag-gag' when alarmed or taking flight.

How to Tell Them Apart
Whooper Swan
All-white plumage. Long yellow bill with large wedge-shaped yellow patch extending past nostrils, contrasting with black tip. Long flat head profile. Holds neck erect and straight. Juveniles pale gray-brown.
Mallard
Breeding males have an iridescent green head, white neck ring, chestnut breast, and grey body. Females are mottled brown. Both sexes show a blue speculum bordered by white.

Whooper Swan
北ヨーロッパ・アジアで繁殖し、南方で越冬する大型のハクチョウ(体長140〜165cm)。純白の体と黄色が多い嘴が特徴。Cygnus cygnus(オオハクチョウ)は日本では北海道の阿寒湖、本州の猪苗代湖など各地の越冬地で見られ、ワシントン条約(CITES)とアフリカ・ユーラシア渡り性水鳥の保全に関する協定(AEWA)で保護されている。Anatidae科。

世界で最も一般的なカモ。雄は光沢のある緑色の頭、白い首輪、栗色の胸が特徴。体長50〜65cm。ほぼ世界中の湖、川、池、湿地に生息。雑食性で植物や無脊椎動物を食べる。多くの家禽カモの祖先。低危険種。
