Resident on dry open stony and sandy plains, fallow fields, and river banks of the Indian subcontinent. Crepuscular insectivore. Runs rapidly. Sedentary or locally nomadic following rains.

Resident in dry miombo and acacia woodland of sub-Saharan Africa from Senegal to Ethiopia and south to Zimbabwe. Insectivorous; most active at night. Cryptic and difficult to see in daytime.
