ホオジロカンムリヅルは体長100〜110cmの大型ヅルで、東アフリカと南アフリカの草地と湿地に生息する。灰色の体・白と赤の肉垂・特徴的な金色の剛毛冠羽が特徴。ケニアから南アフリカにかけての開けた草地・農耕地・湿地縁辺に生息する。木の上で休眠する。

Critically Endangered; world population only ~4,000 birds. Breeds in Arctic Siberia; winters primarily at Poyang Lake, China.
