北極圏で繁殖し、北大西洋で越冬する小型の海鳥（体長17〜21cm）。黒白の体と小さな嘴が特徴で、北極海で最も個体数の多い海鳥の一つ。Alle alle（ヒメウミスズメ）はノルウェー、グリーンランド、スピッツベルゲンに数百万羽が集まる大コロニーを形成する。Alcidae科。
