ヨーロッパ南西部（スペイン、フランス、イギリス等）の岩地や乾燥した草地に生息するヤマウズラ（体長32〜35cm）。赤い嘴と脚、黒・白・栗色のストライプが特徴的。Alectoris rufa（アカアシヤマウズラ）はゲームバードとして狩猟の対象となり、広くヨーロッパに移入されてきた。現在は生息地の減少により個体数が減少傾向にある。Phasianidae科。
