A medium Phasianidae spurfowl (~539 g) of dry thornbush, open woodland, and grassland-woodland mosaics in Tanzania, Kenya, and adjacent countries. Streaked brown plumage; red orbital ring and bill. Forages on the ground for seeds, roots, and invertebrates. Common in suitable habitat; Least Concern.

Dark brown above with pale buff shaft streaks; white below with heavy dark brown streaking; red bill; red legs; red facial skin. Sexes similar; restricted to East African savanna; closely resembles Swainson's Spurfowl.
