Male richly colored: dark brown above with buff streaks; white and rufous barred underparts; red facial skin and bill; rufous-chestnut face. Female less vivid: brown with pale buff barring; red bill retained.

Endemic to the Western Ghats of India; resident of dense evergreen forest edge and thickets from sea level to 1,500 m.
