A tiny Phasianidae quail (~68 g) of moist scrub and secondary growth along the Western Ghats and Himalayan foothills. Males have a bright red bill and richly spotted plumage. Coveys forage in dense scrub for seeds and invertebrates. Endemic to the Indian subcontinent; Least Concern.

Male richly colored: dark brown above with buff streaks; white and rufous barred underparts; red facial skin and bill; rufous-chestnut face. Female less vivid: brown with pale buff barring; red bill retained.
